For most people, Thanksgiving means time with family and friends, reflecting on the things they’re grateful for, and of course, a feast. But for some unlucky people, traveling to see their loved ones leads to something unfortunate: a car accident. Our auto body repair shop wants to help you avoid that, so we’ve put together a list of five tips to keep in mind as you complete your holiday travel this year. Following them can increase your odds of arriving at your destination safe and sound! 1. Keep an eye on the weather. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates that roughly one-fifth of car crashes in the United States can be blamed at least in part on the weather – and they aren’t just talking about snow, ice, or other extreme conditions. Regular rain can be just as dangerous to drivers. So, whether you’re staying close to home or traveling farther afield, check the weather forecasts and build extra time into the trip if you’re expecting anything other than clear skies and sunshine. 2. Slow down. We know you don’t want to miss kickoff or Aunt Diane’s pumpkin soup, but neither of those things are worth getting in an accident. Stay under the speed limit, and if the weather or road conditions are bad, slow it down further. 3. Don’t drink and drive. We saved this for last because it’s the most important. As many as 500 people are killed in car accidents every Thanksgiving, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that up to 40% of those fatalities can be blamed on drunk drivers. Don’t risk your safety and that of everyone else on the road. If you’ve been drinking or plan to drink, designate a driver, ask someone else for a ride, or spend the night on Aunt Marge’s couch if you have to. Of course, even if you do everything correctly, you might still fall victim to bad luck. If that happens, turn to L & O Auto Body Repair Inc. We’re the collision repair experts in the greater Burlington, NC; Greensboro, NC; and Whitsett, NC area. We’ll do everything we can to get your vehicle back in top condition so you can get back to your holiday celebrations. Just give us a call.
